Thanks for confirmation of the source Antony, I shall update accordingly. Great that these can now be more readily accessed. I think whatever my original source was, the confusion was caused by the insertion of a comma between Farquharson and the OG!!!!!anthony.brown wrote: ↑Wed Jan 21, 2026 3:31 pm The score was 2-0 to Hitchin, Barnes and an own goal by J.R.Farquharson (the Lowestoft centre half). There is a detailed report in the Eastern Daily Press of 14th November 1904; also confirmed by the Norwich Argus of 19th November 1904.
If the history threads were protected by sticky status, I would add lots more updates. Remember how the South Eastern League thread got deleted..........................................

Re: Hitchin FC: Early Players
A few teachers from the early years.
Joseph Edward Little, MA (1861-1935) The first Head Teacher of Hitchin Boys Grammar School, where he taught from 1889-97. Press reports show he played for Hitchin FC between 1889 and 1892. Local books tell us that he was particularly proud to have played against Luton Town teams.
Jack Nutting (1863-1904) He taught in the National School before becoming a railway clerk and then a licensed victualler. He played for Hitchin between 1883-85.
William Henry English (1864-1956) An assistant master at Hitchin Boys Grammar School before becoming a private tutor. A Herts County player, and Hitchin FC regular.
Robert Lewthwaite (1867-1907) Another assistant master at HBGS between 1890-1893. He then became a schoolmaster in Lewisham, and then a Head Master in Whitby. Played a few games in 1890.
John Francis Downes Hawksley, BA (1867-1952) Educated at Repton School (a contemporary of C.B.Fry) and Selwyn College, Cambridge.
Played several games for Hitchin FC between 1888-1889.
William Lattimer, MA (1869-1960) A centre-forward for Hitchin, he also served as Club secretary. Educated at Clare College, Cambridge, he was another assistant master at HGBS before leaving for teaching appointments in Preston Grammar School, Brighton College and the Queen Elizabeth School, Barnet. Played for Hitchin FC between 1894-1896.
Arthur John Mander (1881-1980) Played in goal for Hitchin FC 1906-1907. A record-breaking cricketer for Luton CC, he also played football for Luton Town Reserves. Became a popular Headmaster in Luton.
Brian Williams came much later!

Re: Hitchin FC: Early Players
Latest find:
William 'Billy' Lindsay (10 Dec 1872 Stockton on Tees - 24 Feb 1933 Luton)
An uncompromising full back with a long career in the Football League, the Southern League, and South Eastern League.
Began his Football League career at Everton, before moving to Grimsby and Newcastle. Played for Luton Town in the Southern League before transferring to Watford. He then had a time at Hitchin Town FC in 1907, playing against his old Watford team mates on 28 Sep 1907 at Watford in a heavy defeat for Hitchin (0-4). He also played against his old Luton Town team mates on 23 Nov 1907 at Luton; an even heavier defeat for Hitchin (2-10). The local press in those days often failed to publish team sheets and match reports, so Billy may have played several more games which I have not yet found.
