Andrew Frederick Albon (4 Sep 1884 Hitchin - 18 May 1948 Peterborough) Half-back (prefers Centre-half position)
Also played for Hitchin Blue Cross & Chatteris Town.
The Cambridge Independent Press, on 6 March 1908 reported that Andrew had played for Hitchin against Watford 1st & Reserves, Luton 1st & Reserves, Spurs Reserves, Woolwich Arsenal Reserves, QPR Reserves, West Ham Reserves, and Southern United in the South Eastern League. The Hertfordshire papers show him playing the following games:
Sat 12 Nov 1904 Lowestoft 0 Hitchin 2 (FAC 4QR); Sat 2 Dec 1905 St Albans Abbey 7 Hitchin 1 (Herts Charity Cup S/F)
Difficult to be certain about other matches, as the local press reported 'Albone, 'Auburn', 'Orban' etc and often omitted initials.

Hi Antony, thanks for the updates you post on here. Eventually I will get round to making sure that I have all relevant info you have posted on the Forum. It will take some time though.

But one thing I wanted to point out: For the Lowestoft result on Sat 12 Nov 1904, I have it as Lowestoft 0 Hitchin 3, with goals by Barnes, Farquharson and an Own Goal. Not sure what my source of information for that was, but one to check maybe? Thanks again.

The score was 2-0 to Hitchin, Barnes and an own goal by J.R.Farquharson (the Lowestoft centre half). There is a detailed report in the Eastern Daily Press of 14th November 1904; also confirmed by the Norwich Argus of 19th November 1904.
If the history threads were protected by sticky status, I would add lots more updates. Remember how the South Eastern League thread got deleted..........................................

Many church ministers appeared for Hitchin FC in the 19th Century.

John Pardoe (1839-1892) Curate of Hitchin & Wymondley; and later Rector of Graveley, near Stevenage.
The Hitchin Football Club's first secretary (1865). Played for Forest FC 1862-1864. Played for Hitchin between 1866-67.

James Benjamin Parker (1841-1892) While in Hitchin he was a curate at St Saviours. Played for Hitchin between 1866-1870.

Andrew Amos (1863-1931) A full England International (2 caps), he was a regular player for the Old Carthusians, Cambridge University and Corinthians. He played a few matches for Hitchin FC between 1886-1888. Priest in Charge of Clare College Mission, Rotherhithe.

James Percy Lax Amos (1868-1958) Brother of Andrew and Herbert Amos . Played for Hitchin between 1886-1888.

Hubert Seymour Arkwright (1865-1956) Played for Hitchin between 1892-1893.

Charles Arthur Baker (1847-1927) Associated with St Saviours. Played in the first FA Cup 1871.

William Henry English (1864-1956) A Hitchin FC and Hertfordshire player and Secretary of the Herts FA for four years, he became a dissenting Canon after emigrating to Canada. A Hitchin school teacher in late Victorian times.

George Bernard Gainsford (1868-1933) An assistant curate at St Pauls, Bedford, and later a curate at St Saviours (the church in Radcliffe Road built by his father). A Hitchin FC player between 1889-1893.

William Greville Hazlerigg, BA, MA. (1847-1893) A Hitchin FC player between 1871 (the first FA Cup match) and 1873. Later Vicar of Billesden and Rector of Hallaton, Leics.

Claud Edmund Lewis (1863-1947) Played for Hitchin FC between 1887-1894, most as Club captain. Another player with links to St Saviours.
