Promising signs

Post by KEITH »

After 20 minutes I was wondering just how many Stortford would score, 4, 5 maybe. They'd already got 2 very comfortably & our response was to hoof long balls which the Stortford defenders got on the end of every time. Then, out of the blue, we started to play football, keeping it on the deck with some tidy passing & 5 minutes later we had a goal back, George Morrall getting his head on a cross to beat the keeper from close range & we were back in the game. As good as scoring the goal was more importantly it put Stortford on the back foot. From then on it was a pretty even contest & in the 2nd half, arguably, we were on top for decent periods with a huge shout out for a penalty late on when their keeper brought down Coree Wilson, only for the ref to book Corree for diving. A poor decision in my view. He'd already booked a Hitchin player, can't remember who, in the 1st half for exactly the same thing, also very questionable. Brooksie had a glorious chance to equalise with a one on one with the keeper but this guy made an excellent save & later a phenomenal one, getting his hand to a close range downward header which most of us thought was going to be the goal we deserved but it wasn't to be. The lads passing still needs to be worked on to give them confidence but it's a start & an encouraging one. Unfortunately we've no game this Saturday to build on this performance & we're away to a very good Halesowen side the following week. Hopefully Brett can somehow build more confidence in the mean time.

Pessimists are never disappointed.

Totally agree Keith

Stokoe was the player that got booked in the first half for simulation.

The midfield was the key for me last night. So much stronger and competitive than previous games.

Having Gleeson back gave us the experience for the youngsters to work around. Thought George Morrall was excellent and full value for his Man of the Match.

Also thought the crowd who braved horrible conditions were brilliant. So much noise and encouragement.
If we could have found an equaliser the roof would have erupted.

Totally agree!

They are definitely starting to play as a team and its good to see some nice football. Much calmer and in control. Well done to them for persisting and not letting their heads go down. As you say Brian and Kevin hope they can build on this and get some good training sessions in before Halesowen.

A massive thank you from me to all the volunteers who got a good soaking last night and the many supporters to came out in numbers on a dreadful night. We all saw a much improved performance.
